On June 9, Elijah Weeks, a white merchant, was found dead in his store. The next day Lewis Patrick, a young black man, was detained because he had a piece of pork in his possession. He was arrested and taken to the county jail in Beaufort. On the night of June 14, 1899, he was taken from jail by a mob and out to a roadside, where he was shot to death, with his body left by the road for others to find. This was the only known lynching in Carteret County.
