Manager Aaron Boone has gone out of his way to support the idea that Anthony Volpe is the present and future shortstop of the New York Yankees. Recent reports indicate that GM Brian Cashman and his staff might not share the same certainty regarding Volpe's role with the team.

Within the context of this year’s pennant race, in which the Yankees pulled back within three games of the Blue Jays on Ben Rice’s go-ahead, ninth-inning home run Tuesday night at Rogers Centre, Volpe has certainly become a talking point and a punching bag for parts of the fan base, and that likely will continue unless he gets hot at the plate.

"It's a few too many," manager Aaron Boone said of Volpe's 12 errors, the most in the American League this season.
