Nearly two years ago, the Leafs lost leverage in the Mitch Marner contract situation and set the stage for Mikko Rantanen deadline talks.

According to NHL insider Chris Johnston, Toronto explored a possible trade with the Carolina Hurricanes involving Marner and Canes forward Mikko Rantanen, but the Leafs winger refused to waive his no-move clause, effectively vetoing the move.

Following a third straight loss, Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner confirmed reports that he was asked to waive his no-trade clause by Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving.
