Country legend Chet Atkins, one of the most influential and widely recorded instrumentalists ever, died Saturday at his home in Nashville of cancer. He was 77.

Atkins made his first solo recordings in the mid-1940s, but it would take him until 1955 to land his first hit, "Mr. Sandman." He was 31 by then, and more than a decade into his professional career.

He began making instrumental albums in 1953. Harrison, whose work on early Beatles albums is heavily influenced by Atkins, wrote the liner notes for “Chet Atkins Picks on the Beatles” in 1966.
