The famed San Andreas Fault in California is nearly identical to the one that caused last week’s destructive tremor in Myanmar, and is also overdue for an earthquake.

To the east is the North American Plate, which is moving southeast. Los Angeles, located on the Pacific plate, is now 340 miles south of San Francisco, located on the North American plate.

Vertical land motion can be attributed to "natural processes, such as the movement of tectonic plates ... in parts of Los Angeles and San Diego counties," said the NASA statement.
