Gilbert Baker created the original pride flag in 1978. Baker was urged by Harvey Milk to create a symbol for the LGBT community and he chose a flag, which he saw as the most powerful symbol of pride.

Designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978, the 6-Color Pride Flag, or Rainbow Flag, is the subsequent rendition of his original design with two fewer colors, again, for the sake of price and practicality.

Though Stonewall took place in 1969, it wasn't until 10 years later that the original Rainbow Pride Flag was introduced as an international symbol of pride and support for the LGBTQ+ community.
