ISTANBUL — An American researcher who spent 11 days stuck in a Turkish cave after falling ill said he thought he would die there before a complex international rescue operation got him out.

A rescue operation has been launched to save American caver Mark Dickey, who is stranded hundreds of meters underground in southern Turkey.
