In 2024, only 17% of registered voters in New Mexico cast their ballots in the state’s primary elections. More than 300,000 registered New Mexican voters—roughly a quarter of the state’s registered voting population—are currently blocked outright from participating in primaries.
The executive order will direct the secretary of the interior to change the name to "Gulf of America” for use on official maps and throughout the federal government, according to the New York Post, which first reported the news. Trump has nominated Republican North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum to the Department of Interior.
Lawmakers say concerns about Trump could spur more support for measure giving residents the right to a clean environment.
The Congressional Leadership Fund, which is dedicated to electing Republicans to the U.S. House of Representatives, branded Vasquez an "anti-border security extremist" after he voted against the Laken Riley Act "despite promising his constituents he’d support securing the border."
