New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed a bill to shield the identities of doctors who prescribe abortion medications, days after a physician in the state was charged with prescribing abortion pills to a pregnant minor in Louisiana.

The new law in New York expands the state's shield laws for healthcare providers who provide abortion services to other states.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has taken another step to protect New York doctors who prescribe abortion pills after one was indicted in Louisiana.

An arrest warrant has been issued for a New York doctor indicted on Friday by a Louisiana grand jury for allegedly prescribing abortion pills online to a pregnant minor in the Deep South state, which has one of the strictest near-total abortion bans in the country.

The Louisiana case itself is part of a broader strategy pursued by abortion opponents in the state. Last year, a Louisiana state legislator pushed a bill to criminalize coerced abortion after his brother-in-law,

The case opens a new front in the battle between states that ban abortion and states that support providing abortion anywhere in the country.

“At a time when fundamental rights are under attack across the country, we are doubling down on our commitment to safeguard access to reproductive health care and defend those on the frontlines of this battle,” Hochul said in a statement.
