Republicans have set a self-imposed July 4 deadline to pass the legislation in both chambers and send it to Trump’s desk.

The House-passed bill includes a large tax cut, as well as more money for defense and immigration enforcement, financed in part by slashing health, nutrition, education and clean energy programs.

The U.S. social safety net would be jolted if the budget bill backed by President Donald Trump and passed Thursday by the House of Representatives becomes law. It would require many low-income adults to work to receive Medicaid health insurance coverage and more to work to get food assistance,

"I think that all of our colleagues here will really like the final product and I think we're going to move forward," House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters Wednesday evening before the changes were released.

Medicaid has become a key hot button topic in the sweeping tax and spending cuts bill that House Republicans are scrambling to pass as soon as this week.
