The THC deposits look like dewdrops; "dank" essentially means wet or damp; "dank" as weed slang very logically means weed that's loaded with lots of THC crystals. The good shit, in other words. The slang has been around for many decades. Dank was first used ironically to describe memes, likely on 4chan.org. Source: I, uh, heard from a friend.

Dank = a descriptor for fresh and strong weed, so a dank meme is slang for a good viral idea, often spread nowadays as a macro with fast viral sharing online. The very use of "dank meme" to describe a good meme is itself a meme - someone started calling good memes 'dank' and the idea caught on and spread.
