Dec 7, 2023 · Kaihalulu Beach, better known as Red Sand Beach, is a natural marvel forged by volcanoes and hidden away on Maui’s famous Road to Hana. It is one of the most unusual beaches we have seen throughout all of our travels.

Bordered by steep cliffs, the bay itself is protected by jagged black lava rock, sharply contrasting against the vivid blue of the ocean beyond. The trail to the beach, however, passes through private property and navigating the narrow unpaved path to the cove along the cliff edge can be dangerous—so it's best to view this wonder from afar.

The crescent-shaped beach is cut deep into the Ka’uiki Head cinder cone, whose rust-red lava cinder cliffs supply the beach with its red sand. These cliffs of loose crumbly cinders tower almost vertically, yet somehow remain intact to impressive heights.
